Storytime at the Hen House

Join IFL Children's Librarian, Val as she reads stories every Tuesday.  There might be random visits from the house chickens during story-time who love to listen to the stories while they snack on their cheese. Story-time will be 15-30 minutes with an easy craft time afterwards.  This virtual program is geared towards kids aged 2 to 5 years, but all ages are welcome to join in on the fun! The program will be posted to the IFL website before 3 PM on Tuesday afternoons.

  • Join us for our first fall storytime with the chickens! We'll be reading about the coming of fall and some of the things that go with this season! One of those is farmer's markets! We're smack in the middle of harvest time, so there's lots of apples, corn, and the last of the summer veggies out there in the market. Let's read Lois Ehlert's Market Day, published by Harcourt, Inc. and learn a little more about farmer's markets. In the meantime, make sure you stop by the Indiana Farmer's Market while you can! It's soon coming to a close!

  • It's the Last Day of Summer! Nooo!!! But, it's OK. Fall is great, too!. Let's read a fall about about a tree who's getting ready for winter. Michael Hall's "Wonderfall." The book is published by Greenwillow Books. We'll also make a couple easy paper pumpkins during craft time. Well, the crazy girls are here, too.

  • It's Keep Kids Creative Week! It's also the very first full week of Fall. We'll combine the two and read a book about our changing leaves in "Fall Leaves Fall" by Zoe Hall, illustrated by Shari Halpern, and published by Scholastic Press out of New York. Then we'll work on an easy leaf picture from leaves gathered from our yards!

  • It's finally October !! The month of harvest, of changing leaves, and of...Halloween! Let's start on some cool, creepy, and easy Halloween crafts and decorations after we read, "The Little Old Lady who was not Afraid of Anything," by Linda Williams, illustrated by Megan Lloyd, published by Thomas Y. Crowell out of New York. Don't forget to stop in the library and check out our fall & Halloween book displays!

  • Are you getting ready for Halloween yet? We're gonna' start today! First, let's read Pumpkin Heads by Wendell Minor and published by Blue Sky Press. After our story, we'll make a pumpkin suncatcher and have a quick visit with the girls!

  • Another Halloween story!! This one is about sharing and as a result of sharing, creating something wonderful that everyone can enjoy! We'll read, "Bone Soup" by Cambria Evans and published by Houghton Mifflin Company out of Boston. Our craft will be making one of the characters from the book! An then a hilarious morning visit with the girls. I wish I could teach them to behave!

  • Our last story before Halloween! Today we're reading, Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman, illustrated by S.D. Schindler, and published by Aladdin Paperbacks. Our last craft before the big day will be a scary witch fridge magnet made of popsickle sticks! Have a great Halloween everyone!

  • It is a brand new month. The month of Thanksgiving--November!! To get ready for this all American holiday, let's read, "Thanksgiving for Emily Ann," by Teresa Johnston, illustrated by Vanessa Brantley Newton, and published by Cartwheel Books. After our story, we'll make our first Thanksgiving decoration using just some simple things you find around the house!

  • More Thanks for Thanksgiving! "Thank You, Thanksgiving," is our book for the day. It's written by David Milgrim and published by Clarion Books out of New York. After we read our story for the day, we'll make a cute turkey craft from a clothespin and a coffee filter, then on to some singing of turkey songs, and finally! A quick visit with the girls and Bertha's attempted escape from the pen. I can't blame her. It's a beautiful day!

  • Two more storytimes till Thanksgiving! Today we are reading a brand new book that hasn't even gone on the shelf yet! "We Give Thanks," by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier, and published by Beach Lane Books is our story for the day. Then, we'll make a cool Patchwork Apple for your Thanksgiving table decorations!

  • Our very last storytime before Thanksgiving! How about we read another Thanksgiving story? The "Thanksgiving Bowl," is written by Virginia Kroll, illustrated by Philomena O'Neill, and published by Pelican Publishing Company. We'll also work on an easy Glitter Globe to decorate your Thanksgiving table with on the big day. Have a wonderful holiday everyone!

  • Our first Christmas story of the season! The Christmas Quiet Book by Deborah Underwood, illustrated by Renata Liwska, and published by Houghton Mifflin Books for Children. After we read our story, we'll work on some Christmas ornaments for your tree!
