Spring Gardening Series:  Help Save the Monarchs – Grow a Butterfly Garden

Join Master Gardener Julie Baker to learn about what you can do to help protect beautiful Monarch butterflies.  Monarch populations have dropped 96.5% over the past few decades, from 1 billion in mid-1990s to just 35 million in early 2014.  We will talk about the factors causing the decline and what you can do to create a Monarch Waystation to help the monarchs as they make their way to their winter homes in Mexico.   You will learn what types of plants are needed for pollen and nectar sources, along with what types of milkweed might be harmful for the butterflies.  Participants will take home milkweed seeds and plants to get them started.
